JimmyHwangJimmy Hwang was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. He started studying the piano at the age of ten. He studied chemistry and received his B.Sc. at the University of British Columbia, Canada, later earning his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Jimmy continued to take piano lessons while he was an undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia and advanced piano classes while he was working on his Ph.D. dissertation at UCLA. He also took piano lessons while he was working as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

He has been a visiting scholar at the University of California at San Diego and the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He has worked overseas as professor of chemistry at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and Texas A&M University at Qatar. His research interest is in Electron spin resonance (ESR/EPR) spectroscopy, transition metal complexes, spin trap and spin probe techniques, ESR/EPR spin investigation of molecular motions in liquids, liquid crystalline and solids and relaxation in liquids/solids and magnetically oriented phospholipid/lanthanide bilayer. He is also works on spin flip and spin flop processes in magnetic multilayers, sputter deposition of magnetic multilayers in NiFe/Ru system.

Jimmy has over 130 publications and conference presentations in solid/liquid state ESR/EPR, NMR and catalysis. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, ballroom dancing, and practicing the piano. While in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia he studied piano under Harriet Bushman* for two years. He started teaching piano while he was at UCLA and taught piano while in Dhahran. He has performed at KFUPM Piano Recital and Local Artists of the International Concert Committee in Dhahran.

Recently he moved to San Diego to be with his family after working at Lane College as chair of the science division, chemistry department chair, and professor of chemistry.
