Local Young Artist Will Attend Renowned Interlochen Arts Camp

Mark Johnson, 13, of Los Altos, CA has been accepted and will attend Inter­lochen Arts Camp, the worlds premier summer arts program for aspiring artists grades 3 through 12. Johnson, the son of Thomas Johnson and Sandra Coats, will study Inter­me­diate Musical Theater Production at the Camp. In 2012, the Camp will mark its 85th season at the fore­front of arts education.

Mark Johnson is a 7th grade student at Hill­brook School in Los Gatos. He was last seen in Tom Sawyer as Reverend Sprague at the Chil­drens Musical Theater in San Jose. Other credits include The Mayor in Seussical, and The Wizard in Once Upon a Mattress. When not attending school or performing, Johnson studies tap and hip-hop with Marie Stinnet Dance in Campbell, and voice with Heather Stokes in Los Gatos.

Inter­lochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 coun­tries. These 3,000 artists fill Inter­lochens north­woods campus with an explosion of creativity. Student-artists learn from world-class instructors and produce hundreds of presen­ta­tions each summer in dance, theatre, creative writing, visual arts, music and film.

Among the distin­guished Camp alumni are Norah Jones, singer Josh Groban, members of the band OK Go, Rufus Wain­wright, opera and concert soprano Jessye Norman, conductor Loren Maazel, jazz pianist Eldar, actor Anthony Rapp, cartoonist Cathy Guisewite and many more. Approx­i­mately ten percent of the nations profes­sional orchestra musi­cians have roots at Inter­lochen and the alumni community has been awarded 89 Grammy Awards.

In addition to hundreds of perfor­mances, presen­ta­tions and readings by young artists, Inter­lochen brings leading artists and performers to the northern Michigan campus. In recent years, guest artists have included Joshua Bell, the Decem­berists, Rufus Wain­wright, Olga Kern, Bob Dylan, Van Cliburn, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Guster, Lyle Lovett, Trace Adkins, Branford Marsalis and many more.
