there’s no “right” or wrong way. i will say that when you learn complex or long pieces keep reading it because inevitably you memorize things wrong.

Many pianists read through a piece a lot then memorize. Some memorize right off the bat. As you improve you’ll automatically memorize as you’re reading. In the end: everyone is different. Do it your way. If at the end of year you have 20 new pieces memorized and perfected to artist level-you’re doing it right:)

Thanks for the advice. I;ve only been playing piano for about 7 months so do you think I should start sightreading really easy songs or keep memorizing until later when I can recognize the chords and know how to place my fingers? I’m really bad at sightreading lol, I don’t even think I can fluently sightread a song with more than like 3 chords.

That’s what I do. I normally take the first page or even the first few measures an play them until I do them decently. Then I move on until eventually I have done the whole song. Usually by that point you know most of it by heart. The most I’ve been able to memorize is 7 pages and it took a very long time. Just remember not to rely too much on memorization. I did that for quite a while and it just makes improving your sightreading take more time.

So whenever you get a new piece of music you’re supposed to keep sightreading through the whole song until you get it or do it by parts?

  • MeliXdupraeX says:

I haven’t played it so my advice may be useless, but I find that most peices I learn start out with me sight reading (badly) and eventually the peice becomes familiar in my hands. A peice like this, meaning with tons of pages, I think you mainly depend on sight reading, but if you’ve prac ticed it continuously you might find that you recognize the sections and can play from memory.

So is this a song that you have to memorize or kind of half memorize and half sight read it?

Especially when you’re young and trying to achieve your goals in mastering these sort of pieces. :) Beautiful.

Ashkanazy brings a new life to Chopin that no other pianists has including the greats IMHO.

I played this for a recital about a year ago. This is really one of my favorite songs. Although, my interpretation of it was quite different from this. I always thought of this song as slower and more romantic rather than an actual waltz…maybe it’s just me :P

  • almiralaycymusic says:

never quite finished mastering this piece. love playing the first one though! please check out my cover of it :)

I learned part of this song but unfortunately never finished :( At least I can listen to it here.

  • mimolechien says:

Ashkenazy knows this piece and plays this piece like no one else’s business. Perhaps because he loves it more than any one else. Try to find the score he edited, with a few interpretative suggestions and fingering.
